The following position for a Specialty Vehicle Engineer/Designer is working from the Brown Industries, LLC location in Lawrence, Kansas.
Mid-level position in which the incumbents responsibilities focus on designing and creating specialty vehicles in a manner that is consistent with company policies, procedures, and standards.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Design/develop 2D and 3D technical drawings based on design specifications to facilitate the manufacturing process.
Design/Engineer a variety of Specialty Vehicles.
Develop a concept to satisfy customer requirements using drawings, sketches, images, customer drawings or specifications as directed by customers.
Analyze specifications and components to evaluate feasibility.
Utilize Autodesk Inventor, create/modify 3D CAD models and drawings of complete vehicle assembly, sub-assemblies and components for use in production.
Run FEA stress simulations on standard and custom designs as required.
Select adequate mechanical, electrical, hydraulic and pneumatic components that best fit design requirements for each vehicle.
Create integrated chassis electrical systems schematics including lighting, fans, relays, solenoids, control switches, etc.
Create hydraulic layout schematics including PTOs, cranes, Hi-rail gear, valves, manifolds, etc.
Creates BoM for all projects.
Communicates with vendors for proper component application.
Work closely with all production departments to ensure that the drawings convey the correct information.
Self-check own work for completeness, accuracy, meeting standards, fits and tolerance stack-ups.
Establish and utilize drawing standards and file libraries.
Uses the accepted drawing standards as guidelines.
Oversees project documentation.
Ensure product design meets all performance, regulatory, and customer specifications.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Must have strong knowledge of various manufacturing methods including welding, riveting, and other sheet metal fabrication.
Must be self-sufficient and resourceful, able to learn quickly.
Must have a strong mechanical aptitude and be willing to be hands on.
Must have basic knowledge of automotive electrical, structural steel and aluminum weldments.
Must be able to understand and interpret Federal regulations for automotive design to ensure compliance.
Knowledge of fiberglass processes is a plus.
Required Experience:
Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering preferred with minimum 3 years experience as a designer OR equivalent work experience as Mechanical Designer.
Knowledge of design techniques, tools, and principles involved in production of precision technical drawings and understanding of raw materials, production processes, quality control, costs and other techniques.
Proficient in the use of 2D and 3D CAD systems. Inventor experience is preferred, Solidworks or other similar CAD programs are acceptable.
