Hey Scott
The big event is Midwest, it is equivalent to FSAE East, East used to pretty cool because their was a water event but the midwest has the most competitors and is usually the most competitive. The Brazil comp gives the top 2 a trip to midwest, brazilians kick ass in baja so im guessing they come to competet in the best comp only. I was part of baja back in 2003 with Dawson College and we chose midwest because it was the big event.
I hope you make it to FSAE East this summer, its always a pleasure to discuss racecars with you.
I just checked on www.sae.org (http://www.sae.org) and followed the Baja-SAE link lower right hand screen and the events have chnaged name but midwest is equivalent to what they now call Baja SAE-Wisconsin.

Midwest and west are usually the larger more challanging events, with midwest usually being the most popular. The east event is also very challanging however many people shy away from the it due to the water component. Been to three midwest events and was not dissapointed.

Out of the 3 competitions next season, I would go to the Washington one. The schedule for 09 is the same as it was in 06, my junior year. The Oregon/Washington comp is at a world class famous motocross facility, Washougal. It is gorgeous, fast, and the racing is great there.
The Wisconsin comp is in a field...fairly boring although it will have the most cars, likely carnage for all spectators to see, and the most foreign entries.
The Alabama race was supposed to be a water competition, but they are unable to have water this year. It is more of a "trail" race, primarily in heavy woods if they use the same track as 06.

I have always wanted to build a Baja car if for no other reason than having a vehicle to rampage through the woodsy trails that surround the school and have a legit purpose.
