The fundamental difference is the material that actually does the braking, ie: in contact with the pad, isnt rigidly fixed to the hub. This usually means its attached to a carrier such that it can 'float'. Clearance can be included both axially, providing self alignment between pads, and radially to allow the disc to expand thermally.

The advantage is to prevent coning/dishing of the disc due to larger thermal affects in solid arrangments, which can result in brake judder and pad knockoff. Also, depending on the rigidity of your corner assembly, a floating setup enables the pads to remain closer to the disc, without being knocked back during cornering or bumps. This reduces the chance of a long pedal, giving instant braking response.

The disadvantage is obvious increase in number of parts, and therefore cost/machining, and possible a small weight penalty. But look at any racing brake system and you will find a floating arrangement due to the gains above.

There are many mechanisms that can be used to achieve this, but if you look at superbikes which also run thin solid discs, they have an effective light weight bobbin solution.
