Hi All

Honda Racing / HPD has announced support through the US and Canada schools (Please see zipped press release.)

I have been asked to poll the teams on what types of Honda engines and parts that you are using and or plan on using so we can best support your school programs.

Replies here will land in my e mail at HPD and I'll check back here on occasion to answer any questions you have.

Thanks

Thanks for extending your support!

Our team currently uses the CBR 600RR engine, and are currently developing a package with the TRX 450R engine.

Looking at some of what we bought last year from my purchase records, we have:
-Engine sensors (MAP, ECT, EOP)
-Custom ground camshafts
-Fuel regulator washer and assembly (for CBR)
-Exhaust crush washers
-Radiator cap
-Shift arm (for CBR)
-Stock radiator fan (for CBR)

Some of it was from our local Honda dealer, some was from other suppliers.

I will ask our engine guys to see if they have anything else.

Thanks for offering to help us future engineers!

Our team has used the F2 on our first car, then switched to the F4, then the F4i, and then the 600RR two years ago, using the 2007-2008 models for financial reasons, and are looking into trying out some 450 and 500 engines for tuning if the funding becomes available.

We use all stock parts except for the clutch, oil pan and valve cover. We replace our clutches with aftermarket racing clutches and customize our valve cover to remove the extra weight of the emissions equipment. We have a custom oil pan that is much shorter than the stock one to help lower the engine and our CG.

For external parts, we use stock injectors with an aftermarket fuel rail, stock exhaust crush washers, a bought and modified aftermarket shift arm, stock engine sensors (except TPS), an AEM fuel reg and a 10-tooth custom-made drive sprocket.

..Why? You're making less power than the stock bike? Were you doing it for a slipper clutch? I've never understood why people bother shifting 600s. We have a second gear that redlines at 110km/h and just drive in second everywhere. Even towards the bottom of second we're still on the traction control. That's honestly the biggest appeal I see of a 600 for these cars, there's no need to shift. You see teams with 600s using ultra short final drives smashing up and down the gears when they must be at 25%-50% throttle at best for the majority of the track with maybe 3 seconds total worth of full throttle per lap. People need to let their drivers relax a bit and focus on the sea of cones they're trying to navigate.

I'm honestly not sure, it was done on our older engines before I joined the team and there was no documentation for it. I mentioned it because they were asking what Honda parts we used/didn't use. On the RRs we didn't bother because we didn't think it was worth the money.

As for why we have our 10-tooth sprocket, it is because we always want to be in our powerband, which is only above 7000. If we went the other route and used really tall gearing, we wouldn't be able to stay above 7000 in the tighter corners, and our tune really sucks under there. When we're driving we are usually in second or third, and only really use first for accelerating from a stop (or the minimum radius turn).

This is awesome to hear! Thank you for your support!

CSULA currently runs a 2005 FSC600A motor, from the Silverwing. Internals are stock, except for pistons, camshafts, and valve springs. Stock radiator is being used as well. I believe we have used a 89 Civic fuel pump in the past, but I need to check with our engine guys. We also used the CVT that came with the scooter, but created a custom gearbox and used a shorter belt. All other transmission parts are stock.

For future parts, we are possibly looking into new valves, and a race clutch for the CVT. I'll see if I have anything to add later on.

I'd suggest you guys do some work on making the bottom end more usable. Our F4i is useable from 3000 onwards. When we're cruising around a minimum radius hairpin at 3500-4000 we don't need the power, just need it to work smoothly and not surge. If you have a 600 tune it to remove any need for shifting. Your drivers will love you for it.

Hi Rob:

We currently use the CRF450X engine in our FSAE vehicles, in pretty much the stock configuration. We've been using this engine since 2009, and have 5 engines that we rotate through the dyno, new car, spares at competitions, and old cars. We are continually rebuilding motors (top and bottom ends), and try to carry a decent stock of spare parts. We adapt the CRF450R fuel injection system and the TRX450E starter. 2005 CRF450X crate engines were available at a decent price (~$2800) from Honda back in 2008-10, but are no longer available.

It would be great to have the entire 450 series (TRX450, CRF450X, CRF450R) available as crate motors and parts.

Hi Rob,

Thank you as well as HPD to reaching out to support the FSAE programs.

We currently use a 2011 CBR 600RR, which we just implemented this last year. We previously used 03-06 600RR engines but have since moved away due to bang for buck benefits. Below is a list of some parts we have purchased:

Engine Position Sensors (Crankshaft/Camshaft)
Crankshaft Bearings (Rebuilds)
Connecting Rod Bearings (Rebuilds)
Stock Fuel Injectors (Lowers)
Stock Fuel Rail
Internal Oil Pipes (Residing in the oil pan)
Oil Pick-up (Modified for custom pan)
Starter ($$$$$ these are expensive but we like to carry 2 extras just in case).

These are some off the top of my head that we have ordered. I will inventory some of the parts we have and edit this list again.

Are there any future planes extending the support to include teams from other countries.
We are Egyptian team using CPR 600 Engine.
Thanks.
