Just wanted to re-iterate; nomex is suggested by the rules, not required.

The rules state balaclavas and socks need to be made of a fire resistant material. They also state that cotton socks are ok.

Not trying to dump on this thread. This is a great deal!

I'd personally suggest using nomex. Our balaclava's are made of Nomex Comfort (formerly delta c). Its the same Nomex material we make our underwear out of, great stuff.

From some of the fires I have seen first hand, I would stick with the proven materials and products...not something I like to take a chance with. PLus it keeps your helmets cleaner http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Personally I'd like to see the rules made tougher on driver equipment. I would never get into a racing car now without a 2 layer suit, nomex socks and a balaclava. It's just not worth the risk. When you think how much teams spend on other car parts, is $100 in fireproof underwear really that much of an ask?!

I agree. You do not want to have to think about the risks involved when not properly "equipped" in a race car. You want the equipment to do its job and you can worry about getting out safely and quickly.
