So on the 09 car we had mechanical paddle shifters using two pull cables. That didn't work out so well. It had potential I think, but was done wayyy to last-minute. We want to keep driving our car, but the paddles pretty much broke when I did egress at MIS, so I built a replacement. Behold:

The duck is half-full of epoxy, including the head, so any part of it you actually touch while shifting is solid. But, I also left enough empty space inside the duck to allow him to keep his most important feature... HIS SQUEAKER! Despite the silliness, it is SO much better than any shifter we've ever had on our cars. Travel is perfect, don't even need to take your hand off the steering wheel to shift. Just bump the head back and forth, great feel, and easy to find neutral.

Excellent.

I suppose you are still using a push/pull cable though, as a mechanical linkage would put the shifter on the other side.

Yes. I thought about a solid linkage but it would have to go through the gas tank.
