I've seen worse. In fact I've seen worse finish endurance

Actually the drift team got many responses from FSAE and Mini-Baja ppl and they admit the fact that they need an engineer.

To their defense, it's not like the front axle on a drift car will see very big loads

Wow, look how much that left-most arm warped from having all that garbage welded onto it. And lord knows what the microstructure is, sure don't look heat treated. Talk about massive FAIL.

it's actually bent on purpose.
:/ but it was a bit TOO weak because of the horrendous design so they gave it a bit of gusseting.

neither do FSAE cars. But if any of us ever told that to a design judge, even though it is entirely relevant, they'd crucify us.

Hammer, nails and wood already packed! With lots of nails....blunt and rusty! I hope I dont have any problems with Customs in LAX ;-)

well hey.. at least the rod-end in bending didn't break!

Their control arm reacts loads into a beam, not a node, and they tried to fix the problem with a pair of MIG-welded gussets.
*headdesk*
Does it scare anyone else that they said they need an engineer? That implies that they don't have any, which is kind of alarming.

At least they added speed holes to the gusset material... that probably freed up a few horsepower... http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

The problem is they didn't make an A-arm (or a "V" arm), they made a lowercase lambda arm...

I'm not even scared anymore, Pat!
You may yet rue the day when a bunch of FSAE alumni with professional racing experience go back for a Master's and win the competition using a car with rod ends in bending.

I wonder if the guy who designed this posted a thread here "how to design a suspension.. first year team"

It wasn't an FSAE team, it was some drifters with a Bimmer. Check the link in the OP marked "Source."
