We are using a 2005 gsxr 600 engine in our car this year and are keeping it wet sump to save money. Does anyone have pictures of baffles they have designed to help keep oil near the pickup tube?

For what its worth, I have this exact engine in my roadster (slightly bigger version of an FSAE car) and I have left it stock. The car doesn't have aero and probably only pulls around 1g, but I've done plenty of dizzy circles and never had the oil pressure light come on. Back in FSAE at Texas, we ran a baffled wet sump F4i consisting of aluminum panels tack welded in the pan to help control oil flow. It was fine on track and brief skidpad, but sometimes had pressure drop after sustained circles. The GSXR pan is shaped like the keel of a sailboat, which to me, acts like a natural baffle. Much better than the flat F4i pan.

Obviously it is a safe bet to put some baffles rather than ruin an engine. But if you have some sort of data to back up the need, that would be helpful. Has anyone looked at oil level vs. lateral g to see if the pick up is actually uncovered? You may have to make rough assumptions based on oil suction and return rates, but it would be an interesting study.

That is good to hear that you have left oil pan stock and have not seen any problems. I have heard people reference the shape of the oil pan and how it might help keep oil near the pickup. I guess we will find out in a month or so when are car will be ready to drive.

You could try a swinging pickup, they're used for both road racing and for wet sump drag racers with parachutes where all the oil piles in the front of the pan.

The negative is it's unlikely that any off the shelf parts exist, so you'll have to design your own or modify an existing design.

trap door baffles are sometimes good, but like many baffles, they don't protect you against sustained g's. Only dry sumps with multiple pickups can protect you for that.

One thing we've found works really well on our F4i is a "trap-door" design. Basically, include an aluminum hinge in your main baffle that only goes one way so oil will flow towards the pickup, but not away from it (assuming your pickup is offset from the center of the pan).
