I spoke with a few teams (RMIT, Bath, Oxford Brookes) about this at the Formula Student competition, but haven't really progressed it since... until now.
Brunel have had a stand at The Goodwood Festival of Speed (http://www.goodwood.co.uk/fos/) for a few years now, and over the years have asked organisers if we can take our F-SAE cars up the hillclimb. One of the first stumbling blocks is that cars run up in categories (i.e "formula 1 cars" or "rally cars" or "supercars"). Obviously F-SAE is not categorised yet and therefore the reason for starting this discussion is to see if teams would be interested in attending to race the hill climb!
The event is usually around the formula student comp kind of time (early July) so international teams coming over could get involved too. If any teams are interested, please reply: if we get sufficient teams pledging to run then there is the feasibility that this could happen!
Contact the Birmingham team (ubracing_NO_SPAM_@hotmail.com) they were at the Festival this year and would definitely like to run the hill.

Sounds like a winner to me - Loughborough would definitely be up for that...

Personally, i would dearly dearly dearly love to do this. We went to the UK three weeks before FS specifically to go to Goodwood, and I have to say it is the best motorsport event I have been to. All my dream cars (and bikes!) from the last *** years taking it in turns to punt up a British laneway. Aah, bliss. The thought of our little pedal car punting up the hill almost brings a tear to my eye.
If RMIT makes it back to FStudent then you can count us in. Finances are obviously the big issue for us, and we are embarking on a bit of a promo splurge (now our car is back home) to try and raise funds for next year. Will keep you all posted on this front. Jonno, feel free to mail me at home in regard to all this.
From a publicity point of view, this is an ideal event to get some world-wide recognition for our comp. You've got a lot of very influential people at this event, and I would say mostly they would love to see what the new generation of engineers are up to.
Here's hoping, and if there is anything we can do from down here please PM us.
Cheers

That would really be a dream for me.
We have a possibility of participating in Formula Student for the second year in a row, so I dearly hope we could make it...
*dreams on*

Toronto goes to Fstudent every year. That would be SOOOO COOL to see an SAE car do the hillclimb. It would get the motorsports industry to turn their heads our way and see what bright young engineers are out there.

so are Toronto up for it then Vinh?
I reckon I'd need at least ten teams regestering a serious interest for them to consider it... but then surely most teams competing at Formula Student would be up for it... wouldn't they? And the more teams regestering an interest, the more likely people are to pay attention!

I cannot say what my fellow students and lecturers would think of the idea - I would guess they would agree it was a great idea to give the sponsors some exposure so we can continue or even increase our sponsorship. It would also be great fun to see how we compete in a Hillclimb since ive been to see a few in Barbon.
When term starts I will sure bring the idea up and see what they say but I bet the answer would be a resounding yes.
By the way I am from Lancaster University.

Guys just a reminder,
Be careful if you enter events like hill climbs (we've done it before, but probably won't do it again)
It quickly dawns just how unsafe your car is for high-speed impacts
For the Aussie teams, you can enter hill climbs, in "formula libre" class.
Just remind the marshals, about the car having already being scrutinized at FSAE.
They might insist you attach a fire extinguisher as well (which is dumb)

Frank

The Festival of speed is not necessarily competitive... I envisage presenting it to the organisers as a showcase of engineering: Formula Student, FSAE and FSAE-A are events which distinguish whose cars are competitive. Running the cars up the Goodwood hill would merely be an exhibition event (IMHO) to display what we are capable of designing. At any one time there are tens of thousands watching the track, it is displayed all over the ground on large screens, and broadcast on radio accross the ground. That is some pretty impressive coverage I'd say. As for the fire extinguisher rule, well if that is one of the sole stipulations, i'd cable tie one on!
