Hi,

Has anyone had any experience with hex pattern quick disconnect hubs as opposed to spline? There is a huge difference in price and I'm curious if the quality is an issue at all.

hi jon,
a hex quick connect is much cheaper but is totally usless if you want to have any sort of feed back from the road to your driver,

Check out SPA Technique, they have spline quick conect assemblies that are absolutely back lash free, with a master spline to align the wheel the same way every time.

I agree with Mr. Dinasour,
We had a hex on the P-ville car, and it accounted for over half the lash in our system. This was due to the fact that some bald SOB put it in a vise and I had to file it to fit back together. As for longevity and total sweetness, splines are the answer. Maybe baldie wont mistake it for a big nut.

A guy on our baja team picked up a quick release from Strange Engineering and it is very nice. No slop at all, light, and only $80. Not as light as a SPA, but about $220 cheaper. We are going with the Strange.

hi jason,
im not sure where you get you numbers but we payed 125$ US for the quick connect fro SPA Technique, they have special deals that they give to all formula sae team, The 300 value sound more like what it would scost if you wanted the wiring included.

I agree with Jude...I have never paid that much for our SPA quick-release. I think the $125 range sounds right in my head after the FSAE discount rate. The one with the wiring is ~$370 if I recall correctly.

Here is the website:

call them on the phone and tell them you are a FSAE team. These are the best you can get in my opinion and we have used them for 5+ years if not more.

that is the link to the hub that we use. It is a hex style. We definately dont have a backlash issue, and the steering feel is just fine. you must order the hex section and hub seperately for a total cost of about 50 bucks. The hex and hub are each available in steel or aluminum. We use the steel hex so we can weld it to the steering shaft, and an aluminum hub to save weight. The aluminum hub is coated, so it will work fine with the steel hex section.

Yeah that's the exact one I was looking at. There is a spline one available from longacre at a pretty decent price if I remember right.

hex ones are good if the fit is OK (they are useually supplied with a poor fit

we hard anodised our aluminium outer section (stripped the old anodising first).. to stop wear

One quick release pin from McMaster Carr ~ $15. Tight bore on both in shop made hub and steering shaft ~ near zero slop.
