View Full Version : Shared CAD Files Library for FSAE

James Waltman
12-29-2006, 12:46 AM
The FSAE team at Western Washington University (http://dot.etec.wwu.edu/fsae/) has agreed to host a CAD file library for everyone. This will be a central place for teams to share common CAD files.

I'll be helping to manage this. Contact me if you have any files that you would like to contribute (email in my profile).

Right now there's a basic structure set up and I expect that it will stay this way (pretty bare bones).

You should be able to find it here:
<STRIKE>http://dot.etec.wwu.edu/fsae/Shared_FSAE_CAD_Library/</STRIKE>

New location - Dec 29th 07:
http://www.wwufsae.com/Shared_FSAE_CAD_Library/

There isn't much there yet. I'll make this thread a sticky for a while and see if it helps to build up the library. Feedback will determine how long it stays a sticky.
The creator of the model and their contact information will be included whenever possible. Don't send any files that didn't come from you or your team unless you have permission from the creator of the file.

I don't want to hear anything about how sharing CAD files robs people of some sort of learning.

Edit was to update link for new location.

I offer you to start a database-based downloading center (i.e. mysql-php) to let the visitors search the contents and downloads. In this way it will remain for the years with a powerful file library. I can help you to setup such website.

Well, this isn't mine, so I won't send it to you, but I will post the link to it. I can't remember if we are using the higher level assembly or not. I believe one of them has modified parts, like the oiling system, so be careful which one you use.

Hi all! I was working on the same thing. I started setting up a google group and have loaded some files. They're Solidworks parts.

Nima,
Thanks for the offer. I don't really know anything about MySQL so I don't understand how it would improve this. I have access to the server to add and remove files but not access to do much else. I don't expect that there will be thousands of files to search through or keep track of.

This was always something that I thought would be helpful but never got around to doing. I thought that the shared gmail account (http://fsae.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/125607348/m/20610992731) that Matt Gignac set up would be the solution. It didn't quite work (http://fsae.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/125607348/m/50010038731) so I've decided to go this way. I think that this will be a pretty stable way to do it.

Dan,
I thought about using Google Groups too. I'm a big fan and the owner of a few groups.
The new Files (http://groups-beta.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=46764&topic=9251) feature is nice but the current limit is 100MB per group. I don't think that is nearly enough.

Nima

OK, ask your web server admin to give you a mysql account in that server. it is enough to setup a powerful download center. If you want to test what am I saying, get the mysql account then I will do what ever must be done, just for testing and if you accept the work I will complete it without any money.
else I don't insist any more.

I zipped them with WinZip 9. You can get the old version of the software here: http://www.oldversion.com/download.php?idlong=10ea7aa83461dc7eaf38ab5352db1d 67

Is anyone else having the same problem? I downloaded the file and it opened fine.

well i suppose it depends on how thorough your CAD training is within your curriculum but for team members that can barely draw a cube giving them a part to model helps them become more familiar with the software and will help increase their productivity as they learn to use features that improve efficiency.

James, I think this is a great idea.
Hey Guys...
Just wanted to say that this model actually belongs to California State University, Northridge. Some of our alumni actually went and got most of the components CMM. As far as the accuracy, we've found lots of problems and it actually was the fault of our engine mounts being about 1 inch off. Be wise if using this model. Being able to modify it to make the corrections is pretty complicated as well. Oh and this is actually a 2001 engine that was modeled, not a 2003 like it says. The transmission internals were from a 2003, and I think that's where the confusion came from.

I think this database is a great idea.

Rob, there isn't an RR model up there yet. I haven't gotten anything from Mac yet.

Ricardo, I tried to get a hold of Chris (who originally posted that model). I haven't had any luck yet.
Do you mind if I put it up to share (errors and all)?

Oh...that's very interesting. Thanks for letting us know. So, if we were to model a frame off of the mounting points in the solid model, would it be wrong? Is the block different for a 2003?

Unfortunately we found out that the "Yamaha 03 R6" model is not as accurate as we were led to believe. As it turns out, the crankcase is actually a half inch shorter, while the engine mounts are accurate.

julio93

James, I don't think you will be able to get a hold of Chris. He is very hard to get a hold of.

Absolutepressure, the mounting points on the 2001 and 2003 Yamaha R6 are not the same. Like Ricardo said, the model looks good by it has its bugs.

Can anybody share the 2006 SAE Handbook and/or 2006 SAE Standards Ground Vehicle CDs? Our team can't find it anywhere, and we need them to keep our project in compliance with the official rules. We don't want to leech it anywhere, we need it just for personal use. Even if the 2005 Standards are available, we will also be very obliged. The server is undergoing some changes.
I don't know the whole story yet.
It was an independent server for the Vehicle Research Institute at WWU. That may be changing and the files may end up on the Department's server. Like I said above, I'll post here when it's back up (in whatever form).

Alright,
The library has been moved.
The new location is:
http://www.wwufsae.com/Shared_FSAE_CAD_Library/

This is the new WWU team website. The bandwidth for this site costs money (the last server was free to the team). Download whatever you like but please keep that in mind.

About the engine models: I might have added more models than were there before. I'm pretty sure that I had permissions for all of these. There should be credit for where the model came from.

I've added several models that I dug up recently. Nothing too big – battery, air filters, some engine sensors, etc.

Please email me if you have any models you would like to share – I was really hoping this would have more models than it does now. I encourage you to donate if you have anything – especially if you've been asking for models from this library. Please reciprocate. Send me an email and we'll work it out.

Tobbe,

You will have a heap of trouble opening .SLDPRT in ProE...not sure about Catia.
But for ProE your best bet is to use wireframe Igs, and try salvage whatever it comes out as.
In my experience, ProE and SolidWorks don't communicate too well

I've added a model of the Aprilia SXV550 from Cardiff.
http://www.wwufsae.com/Shared_FSAE_CAD_Library/Engine/Engine_Models/Aprilia/
The one difference with this model: Cardiff has asked that, if you use it, you place a sponsor sticker on your car. The zip file has a .jpg with the logo.

It's a big point cloud that bogs down my computer. Maybe some of you will have better luck with it.

Thanks to Dave Murray at Cardiff for contributing.

As a side note, I think it would be beneficial to have a place to upload useful excel spreadsheets too. Sometimes those can be even more valuable than CAD models IMO.

James Waltman
07-09-2008, 06:51 PM
I can host Excel and pdf files in the same place as the CAD library.

I'd start off with it all in the same directory.
Brake spreadsheets go in the same place as brake CAD files.
If there is sufficient demand, I could eventually separate it out.

Start sending them and I'll put them up.

Hallo to all

Is possible to receive the point cloud file of this CBR600RR model?

I need to use this file for a study, and I need to try to make a beautifull 3D model from the cloud....but is necessary to have the cloud or the STL/ASCII/PLY/TXT file format.

Thanks in advance...and sorry for my bad english

The FSAE category on www.3DContentCentral.com (http://www.3DContentCentral.com) contains bearings, controls, brakes, drive train, chassis, suspension, fans, powertrain, switches, wheel and other sub categories. You can download in SolidWorks and other file formats. We set these categories up for FSAE teams and appreciate your support.

Also, www.3DContentCentral.com (http://www.3DContentCentral.com) is a great place for other standard parts used in senior design projects.

For SolidWorks sponsorship this year, go to www.solidworks.com/fsae (http://www.solidworks.com/fsae) Marie

This Library ( http://www.wwufsae.com/Shared_FSAE_CAD_Library/ ) will start moving over to the www.3DContentCentral.com (http://www.3DContentCentral.com) site with help from Paul Vizzio at SolidWorks.

It’s a much better format and I don’t get that many submissions anymore. (I expected more from everyone – especially the teams that have asked for models.)

You’ll have to register and log in to get models but it’s pretty straight forward. I don’t see any other downsides.

Paul will be contacting anyone who has contributed to get permission before transferring anything.
You’ll still get credit.

When it’s all up and running I’ll unsticky this thread and put up a new one.

I’ll probably leave the current library in place for some time in case there are any issues.

Consider this an open comment period if anyone can think of any concerns.

To get the model you have to contact drexler about it. they make you sign a agreement that you wont send out the model but they will then give it to you.

You should be able to import a .dxf file into your solid modelling program as a sketch. From there you will need to make the part 3D on your own, but you will have a start. Use the "help" function in your solid modelling program, or see if you modelling program has tutorials/videos online.

Oh, and you could always make the part yourself from looking at the .dxf...

Pardon me if this has already been mentioned; I've not checked all 7 pages.
At our website www.aurorabearing.com, (http://www.aurorabearing.com,) we have 2 and 3D CAD drawings available for our catalog rod ends and spherical bearings. The nice thing is, rod ends are a fairly consistent product in terms of envelope, so drawings are not Aurora specific.
