To all the friends we made at FSAE this past spring,
Attending the 2004 Formula SAE competition was one of the most amazing experiences of our lives. We learned more in a few days from observing your teams than we could have hoped to learn in a year from reading books and articles (not to mention we learned which books and articles are important to read in the future). We didn't just learn about the design of cars, but all the other important processes that must take place to bring our first car to competition. Our main goal in the design process is to make a reliable car in enough time to perform extensive testing.
This summer we spent the bulk of our time fundraising. Using a variety of techniques we were able to start gathering some cash and lay groundwork to raise more in the near future. However, our school is treating this like any other senior design project and providing us with very little funding. The mechanical design of our car will be more dependent upon the hardware we can afford on our very limited budget than any performance benefits awarded by higher price components.
If you have any parts that are going up for auction or are looking to be sold, we would like for you to send us a list with prices. We are hoping that some of the more experienced teams may be able to donate parts that are no longer needed and have to low a resale value to be of any use. I would like to list the specific parts in which we are interested, but being how this is a first year team, the list is endless. Every thing from shocks and springs to side view mirrors and a tail light... This past week we did purchase an engine off a 2004 F4i, but it does not have a radiator. Please respond to this letter as soon as possible so we can begin the task of weighing and balancing all of our options. We appreciate your help, support, and look forward to seeing you in the near future. Have a great semester!
