View Full Version : Lateral tilt method for finding CGH

I need to design something that will allow me to find CGH with the lateral tilt method. I've only been able to find this guide axle lift method (http://www.racerpartswholesale.com/longtech6.htm)

If I were to use an angle iron, I would I go about making sure the pivot point doesnt slip? If anyone could just direct me to a book to read or a site that'd be great.

We haven't had any problems using angle iron on a concrete floor. Make sure that if one of your track widths is narrower than the other, you shim the angle iron on the narrow end and use the wider track for your calculations. Also make sure dummy shocks are installed at ride-height, and tires are at high pressure, and fluids are full or empty, not halfway.

And don't forget to account for the geometry of your angle iron (or whatever you use for a pivot) when calculating CG height.

Just to clarify, would you tilt the car until the load came completely off the wheels furthest from the pivot and assume therefore that the weight vector was passing through the pivot point? This as opposed to measuring a change in load at the pivot?

Right, we attach a digital level / inclinometer to the frame, and have several people tilt the car. Once it gets close to the balance point, we let just one person move it until it feels balanced to him, then record the tilt angle, then work the trig out to get CG height.
