As we're heading out the door seems like an appropriate time to start this one...I know Oklahoma is planning to post facebook updates throughout the week for those who want to know what's going on in Fontana(http://www.facebook.com/home.php#!/pages/Formula-SAE-Sooner-Racing-Team/170128263021).
Good luck and safe travels to everyone!

I have created a twitter list with 101 FSAE teams and individuals. You can follow it here: http://twitter.com/#!/amzracing/fsae
If there's an FSAE-related twitter user who's not in our list, let me know.
Good luck to the teams in California. Congratulations to GFR, I was surprised. I guess eCar won't have aero, it's got enough static downforce already http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

For those of you visiting California for the first time, there are LOTS of automotive/motorsports attractions in the area. If, and I know that’s a big “IF”, you have any spare time, consider the following:
Wednesday Night Speedway Motorcycles at Industry Speedway. This is 30 miles from Auto Club Speedway (which means over an hour in LA traffic on a Wednesday evening). Speedway bikes are not the same as flat track bikes. These are alcohol fueled 500cc singles racing on an 1/8 mile dirt track. There are typically 40+ four-lap races in an evening, each race under a minute long. http://www.industryspeedway.com/ Admission is $10 for students.
Depending upon how late the awards go, there is Saturday night at Toyota Speedway in Irwindale http://www.toyotaspeedwayatirwindale.com/ This is about 35 miles from Fontana. This is a ½ mile paved oval – It’s almost a scale model of the track in Fontana. A first-class venue.
The Wally Parks Motorsports Museum (aka the NHRA Museum) at the LA County Fairgrounds. http://www.museum.nhra.com/ This is a wonderful collection of racer cars – not just drag racers either. Open Wednesday-Sunday, 10 am – 5:00 pm. Each year, the L.A. Roadsters puts on one of the largest roadster shows, swap meets, and commerical vendor shows in Southern California. ??In 2011, the 47th Annual Show will be held on Father's Day Weekend June 18th and 19th in Pomona, CA (adjacent to the Wally Parks Musuem). http://www.laroadsters.com/
For anyone flying into SoCal via LAX, there is a great car museum about five minutes from the airport, the Automobile Driving Museum in El Segundo. http://www.automobiledrivingmuseum.org/ Open Tuesday-Sunday, 10 am – 4:00 pm.
Looking for non-car events that affordable? The Los Angeles event calendar and guide to what's hip, happening and affordable can be found at http://www.laintheknow.com/
The Riverside International Automotive Museum covers the history of racing in Southern California, and has an outstanding collection of Maseratis. http://www.riversideinternational.org/

Wednesday Update:
As of 2 PM today, I counted about 54 teams that have cars on site (of 80 registered). I believe that about 25-30 teams made it into tech inspection today, and I don't know how many made it out with a sticker. The lightest cars, that I know of so far, are Wisconsin-Madison at 331 lbs and Oklahoma at 338. For those that are trying to follow from abroad, tilt table (and fuel) open tomorrow morning. I'll plan on posting more updates tomorrow as scores are published onsite.

Congrats to OU on the weight. Breaking the lightweight car misconceptions: spaceframe, Ape and big aero. Should be an interesting comp with all of the aero cars fighting it out. Hopefully a preview for next year in Lincoln?

By our books (so highly unofficially, Oklahoma takes skidpad with a 4.87 average, and ETS was fastest in accel at 3.91 (I believe). Autocross from 1:30-4:30. It's on 91.9 FM locally. I'll leave it tonspmepne official to say if that's mirrored online anywhere.

Oregon state wins autocross followed by Kansas, Maryland, ETS, Missouri S&T, Oklahoma, Wisconsin, Illinois, New Mexico, and RPI. All unofficial of course. Alberta won cost event. As of now and on my spreadsheet, GFR and ETS bold a commanding lead over the rest of the field. Should be a good endurance tomorrow, I'll be counting on kaley or someone to have good updates during the day.

It sounds like quite a few cars DNF'd in the restart. Is it usually this common? I wonder if there is a relationship between testing time and enduro restarts?
We did quite a few enduro simulations in the run up to comp (FSAE-A 2010), and the only issue was with our second enduro restart: we'd hit the barrier during practice, and the idle went up from 4000RPM to like 7000RPM. As a result, the engine stalled if the revs dropped.

Cal State Fresno failed to restart in driver change resulting in an DNF.
Cal State Sacramento is now in driver change...will they suffer the same fate?
UAEMex Racing just entered and with their first lap completed had a time of 121 seconds

Great coverage, thanks for the updates.
I know a lot of our team, myself included, were sitting round at 3am, busily hitting the refresh button to see how it played out... FSAE tragics!
Congrats to ETS on taking the win.
Apparently you don't need aero after all to win West!
Also great to see Sooner and Maryland up there, but a shame a lot of the other fast teams dropped out. Would have been interesting to see how fast GFR could have gone with a few more laps, and S&T and Kansas were obviously very quick. Does anyone know how fast UIUC were lapping? From pics I have seen their aero looked awesome.
Also what was the story with UTA this year? They didnt go to East or West? Was looking forward to seeing how they interpreted the new aero rules...?

Likewise from here, congratulations to every team that made it out there!
With respect to Illinois' performance in endurance, we weren't exactly able to extract the full potential of the car. We were unfortunately running a bit on the high side with respect to oil temperature and had to ask our drivers to be somewhat cautious (we suspect oil overheating as a cause of our DNF at Michigan's endurance event)

What an event. There were so many competitive teams this year, great job to all that showed, I was really impressed with the number of really fast cars that I saw.

I had a great time this year. The event was very well run and it will be a shame to see California for the last time. Thank you to all of the SAE workers that made this event great again.

To expand on Prashant's comments, take our times with a grain of salt. For AutoX laps 2-4 we were stuck in 2nd gear, and endurance was a battle against engine heat. Our first 5 laps of oil temp went something like this: [200,250,290,299,310]
We crossed the finish line with an oil temp of 340F and an engine temp of 129C...it was quite amazing
I know these issues are the name of the game and every team has there own "if only" situations, but I also know our car had some better times in it.

Wow, that Tilt test must be the error of the month. At least three things went wrong catastrophically.
I didn't know there were so many prices to win at US competitions. Eight tires and 5k USD for the winner, not bad at all. Seems like Maryland will be able to do a nice comparison between Hoosier (4 new tires) and Goodyear (6 new tires) if they want to.
Congratulations to all teams. Looking forward to seeing GFR (with wings?), RIT and ETS at FSG.

What exactly went wrong with the TILT test? How did the operator not notice the extreme angle?

It clearly states in the rule book 60 degrees (plus or minus 20 degrees)...haha

It looks like that little orange thing the operator is looking at is an angle finder. Either the needle or bearing inside it may have gotten stuck. With how quick the transition from 45-60 degrees happens I could see you going right past that if there is no travel stop.

Congratulations ETS on a commanding win. 916 points!
I have always been a fan of your cars ever since I saw the awesome looking '06 car.
Accel, enduro and nearly fuel. Impressive. Any tricky system to the accel win? or is it just that fast?

FSAE and the volunteers working the tilt table regret the incident involving the UC Davis team. We are grateful no injuries were sustained and the car was able to finish the competition. Precautions were put into place to ensure this does not happen again in the future.

First the terrible brake test accident at FSUK2010 and now this.
When do the organizers learn that they have to be at least as professional as the top teams are?

Don't knock the organizers and techs. They put on an amazing production and we should be nothing but thankful for that.
Don't forget that even the best of the best competing teams have equally embarrassing moments here and there...

Since many of you were unable to attend the presentation feedback session at Fontana, I wanted to share my notes.
2011 FSAE-California Biz Feedback Notes
Our veteran judges, some who have been here all six years, advised the overall quality was the best they have seen.
This years’ group of judges was the best ever (IMO). We had representatives from Mazda, Toyota, Hyundai, KIA, Suzuki, and Coda. We had journalists, academics and retired racers. We even had a former F1 team manager.
There were several near perfect scores. The top five were all viewed as amazing.
Preparation – It was OBVIOUS who did and did not prepare.
Showing up late in flip-flops and torn jeans and no presentation – just winging it. Really?
To paraphrase Scottish literary critic Andrew Lang; “Many of you use Powerpoint like a drunken man uses light-posts….for support rather than illumination.”
There is a phrase know in industry as “Death by Powerpoint”. Fancy graphics are great if they help you TELL THE STORY. Ask yourself if they did that?
One of the top-five teams used no powerpoint whatsoever. Content and delivery outweighed the lack of fancy graphics.
Handouts – About half of the teams had nothing. Really? Would you go to a job interview with no resume?
For those teams speaking English as a second language, we had very positive comments overall. An outstanding job.
Enthusiasm – The judges, especially the rookie judges, were surprised at how little enthusiasm many of you showed. Not sure if this was nerves, lack of sleep, or having the wrong team members doing the presentation. I KNOW you are enthused, but it failed to show in many instances.
Get help from within your school. Is there any competing university that does NOT have a business department?
Did you videotape your presentation? Why not? How will next years team improve?
Comments from top presentations:
“Extremely good market analysis”
“Original approach”
“Well balanced”
“Nice handouts”
“Outstanding delivery”
“Answered questions well”
“Good energy”
“Students well dressed”
“Well thought out”
“Good talk of customer relationship”
“Excellent financial analysis”
“Great use of team members to answer questions”
Comments on poor presentations:
“Bare-bones”
“Finished too early”
“Ran late”
“Showed up late”
“Blank stare instead of answers”
“No real financial proposal”
“Did they even read the rules”
“Poorly dressed”
“No presentation, just winged it”
“I expected a lot more from a school like……”
“Sloppy presentation”
“Needs to read rule book”
“Made poor use of time.”
“Wasted time in set-up.”
“No sense of market.”
“No clear idea of marketing.”
“Not compelling.”
“Work on delivery.”
“Unsure of what they were pitching.”
“No slides. No show and tell parts. Nothing.”
I've enjoyed supporting this event since 2006 and wish everyone well in Nebraska, Michigan, or wherever you compete in 2012. My goal remains to assist as many of you as possible in finding gainful employment in the industry. My favorite moment was last year when one of the judges DEMANDED a resume from one of the presenters -- he was THAT IMPRESSED with what he had seen that he wanted to talk career options.

I second Dean's comments about the quality of the cars at the 2011 event.
The design and prep state of the cars we saw in Tech was much better throughout the field this year--very consistent throughout. The top half are always well prepared but we didn't have a bunch of dogs this year that needed a lot of work to pass. You guys must be doing a better job of reading the rules and Tech appreciated that! Not a bunch of 3-4 hour tech jobs with numerous trips to the welder! I recall only one "no hope" entry this year.
I think the requirement to submit drawings of your chassis with your SEF helped as we were able to point out problem areas so you could fix things before showing up at the competition. Any comments on this point?
Also, I think assigning random tech order numbers beforehand was an improvement to the process. It certainly was better than last year's "land rush" cluster! If we were to do it again in CA, we would need to fine tune things, of course. We would need to make sure that our order list in Tech gets updated when you swap numbers, and we needed a way to post the current number more prominently. Any comments from the Teams on this aspect?
Overall, I think it was the best FSAE-CA event and kudos to the Teams for doing a really good job throughout the field on their designs and preparation!
