Was waiting for the thread to come up. Couldn't wait anymore http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif Please post updates from the event. Which universities have the 'Car to watch'?
How did the static events go today? Were there any dark horse teams? Who are the ones to watch in the comp?
Well, myself Ashmeet Sidhu, Founder-Captain IIT Roorkee Motorsports. We're joining you guys next year in Australia!

Yes, well done to MUR. Pipped us by three points (damn cost event!!!) http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
We were stoked to finish in the Top 5, especially with a brand new car and with very little seat time our drivers did an amazing job.
Thought we had it over Monash in the accel buy they were too good and bested our time by 0.02 seconds.
If there was a prize for Best Presented, I'm sure we would have won that... or beat Monash at least. http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
At the airport right now, will try to get some pics up tonight.

What on earth has happened to RMIT and UWA? Such a shame considering how both these teams have performed in recent years.
Anyway, congratulations to Monash for their second consecutive win! You guys planning a trip to Europe again in 2011?
And, anyone, pleeeaaase get us some pictures!

Jasper,
At UWA we had a lot of trouble getting the car finished on time this year. It's a combination of making lots of changes to the cars design and having a much smaller team than usual.
The car was only finished 6am Saturday morning, and only ran on the track for the first time in the Sunday afternoon enduro. Sounded quite awesome after the muffler blew up. We were all really glad that the track marshals allowed us to keep running for a while with no muffler to see what sort of speed the car actually had.
We're hoping to take the car to another competition in the coming year if we can organise the funding. Hopefully we're able to compete with some top teams again.
Thanks a lot to all of the other teams who helped us get the car running and through all of tech, it's much appreciated.
Congratulations to Monash who blew everyone away. Their car was truly amazing.

We were really happy with our result.
Probably the best organized and run Australian comp ever, everyone at SAE did a great job.
Was a really shame that UWA, Auckland and RMIT did not get much running on track, but many smaller teams really stepped up this year, particularly Swinny, Melbourne, UTS, ADFA and QUT.
More comments and lots of videos from our incar camera to come later but just wanted to remind everyone who is still in Melbourne tomorrow that we will try to organise a drive day at Silhoutte (or Oakleigh if they are busy) tomorrow (tuesday).
We plan to do car swaps and tyre swaps.
At this stage I know that ourselves (Monash), Auckland, Swinny and Melbourne were interested. We should have Avons, Goodies and Hoosies available. If any other teams are keen please get in contact with us ASAP and post your contact details here, everyone is welcome.

Hi all
Firstly I'd like to congratulate monash on such a dominating win. Their professionalism is a cut above at the moment
The weekend from deakins point of view was a little disappointing but also encouraging. Our car was completed the thursday night and with no testing time it was always going to be tough and we certainly ran into our fair share of niggling issues. We did eventually get out for a run and the car did show it has potential.
Probably the most dissapointing to happen to us was the allocated scrutineering. We were due to go in at 12:50 and I think we actually got in around 3:00 this made it impossible to get back and fix the tech prolems we had.
I really think something needs to be done in regards to the way tech is run to make it fair to the teams who are later in the order.
I'd like to thank some of the other teams througout the weekend especially monash Adelaide, adfa, uts and the uni of Sydney all of these guys helped us out with quite a few bits and pieces
I also wish we could have opened up the tent
a little more and had more of a chance to show off the sidewinder but we were all that busy it was hard to work and talk at the same time.
Hopefully the guys next year will get a car built early and have time to iron out all of the bugs. If they do it certainly could be a bit of giant killer of a car.
Oh and that uwa car sounded so good on it's enduro run and it got even better when the muffler parted company
I think that's all I have

New here but my 2nd event. We had a reasonable result considering our budget.
The first time I met Pat. I was told he would smile and be friendly and then smash us with some dynamics questions. That did not happen.
Pat was smiling and friendly and smashed us with some electrics questions LOL
Really a good event and good on Monash and Swinny
Ruf
First event out, bar watching last year and having no idea what was going on. That's pretty much the well Melbourne always does it.
We're super happy with our performance, we hit the weekend amazingly prepared with heaps of track time down, passed scrut, tilt, noise and brakes first and posted good strong times for every event.
Skidpan gave us our first ever Dynamic event podium, and it was massive to finish a tiny bit off the pace and come in 4th. Very happy with a top 5 finish, especially being ahead of some really strong teams and given the calibre of the teams that made top 3.
We're recuperating and re-energising (and sending some boys to OptimumG), so we'll have photos and videos up soon.
We update the website heaps:

Have a youtube channel:

And I think maybe a twitter, but I don't use that.
Expect soon good stuff up soon. Oh, and we're doing a coffee table book for sponsors this year! Should be very cool.

Hey Guys,
I had an absolute ball at this year’s competition. It was such a nice change to have a relatively smooth run through all events and come away with a bunch of personal best results for our team. My goals were design finals, a trophy and complete endurance. We managed to complete all those goals so it made for a very rewarding weekend. I think now we need to look at setting the bar higher and seeing what we can achieve.
There were some really nice cars at the competition, in particular I liked some of the features on the new RMIT car so it's a shame it didn't run much. I feel really sorry for the teams who have previously had great results and didn't do too well this year. On the other hand it is kind of nice to know that tough years happen to the best of us and success appears to be cyclical.
Congratulations to Monash though for an outstanding performance. I would have loved to be at the car swap and have given it a run. So where to for Monash now? Are there any plans to attack the US comps?
I agree whole heartedly with previous comments about the competition being run really well. I really appreciated the way we were involved in recovering our car when it DNF in enduro 1 (due to brake over travel switch). I also really liked the use of the natsoft timing system and being able to watch our driver’s lap times from the pits. Perhaps next year we could look at getting that information put up on a big screen like at FSG.
I would really like to thank all the volunteers who make the event possible in particular those who part with their hard earned and travel significant distances to get to the competition. It's really good to see the number of FSAE grads helping out and I hope to join the crowd for good as a volunteer next year.
Thanks to Scotty and the crew at Monash for giving us the bits to get through sound and any other teams who gave or loaned us stuff that I wasn't directly aware of. It's always a pleasure to help other teams out when they're having a bit of trouble because I understand the feeling only too well from previous years.
For the Sydney teams I think it would be great to try and organise some sort of drive weekend/car swap in the New Year. I know I always enjoy talking to other FSAE teams and I learn a lot talking to them about their cars and ours.
Congratulations to everyone who participated and made it to the comp. You're already miles ahead of the people at your uni's who can't be bothered to get involved.
Cheers

Everyone at UTS is absolutely stoked with our comp results this year. We definitely showed our cars potential on the track, and we look forward to taking it to the top teams next year. It took a lot of hard work to make the jump from last in 2009 to 9th this year but it was definitely worth the effort. Now we look forward to driving our car and training up some drivers for the 2011 comp.
It was great to see everybody again, as well as meeting several new people throughout the weekend. It was definitely the best FSAE-A yet. We we're happy to help out a few teams when trouble struck, and we are incredibly thankful to everyone who helped us out when we needed it. It was really nice to see all the teams helping out each other to try and get as many cars on track as possible. It really made it a great event.
Pretty bummed we missed the car swap today, but we'll definitely make more time next year, and ensure we're there for the Tuesday.
Thanks everyone.

The car swap went great.
I think everyone learnt a lot from the day.
It would be good if we could get some comments up here about it from the teams who were involved.
Monash turned up a little late (and still drunk!), but we managed to get drivers from Auckland, Swinny, Melbourne, Mizzou and Pete Marsh from UWA in our car. I was pretty impressed but how quickly they came to grips with the car and were able to push it hard.
Our driver Ashan also got to drive Melbourne and Swinny, so thanks heaps for that guys, we learnt a lot about power delivery, pedal feel and steering feedback from the experience.
Also a high thanks to Auckland who were kind enough to lend us a set of their Goodyears which we tested on the car for the first time with great results. We have long been fans of the Avon, but based on how much more composed the Goodies made our car look and the fact that we found similar ultimate grip levels, improved combined acceleration (as Pete said, they have a friction rectangle rather than ellipse!) and better wear characteristics, I think we will be changing to them in 2011. Auckland also loaned us their tyre pyros so we will do some proper back to backs in the coming weeks, but the drivers loved them.
We have some really great in car videos of Pete Marsh in our car on the Goodies so will post them to youtube in the coming days. You have to see the 5m wide lane change taken flat in third gear, its insane. Thanks for all your help and advice Pete and the rest of the UWA team, hope to see you back in the hunt next year.
Thanks to all the teams that came down, we should definitely make the Car Swap Tuesday a tradition in coming years and try to get all the teams there.
Cheers,
Scott

If you google 'Natsoft' the second or third link will take you to race results. The FSAE-A results are a few places from the top of the list. The results have a summary of fastest laps as well as lap by lap. They were showing this data on a laptop on the tray of the truck in the driver change area (apologies if by pit you thought where the pit garages were). I am sure this data could easily be fed to a large screen if they were feeding it to a laptop. Natsoft do all the timing for V8 supercars and most other Australian motorsports below that.
So who's going overseas next year and where?

First off, Congrats to Monash for winning.
From our point of we were very happy to finish second. We thought we would be in with a decent chance, but getting design finals with a 240/250kg car was not expected.
Some of the usual suspects faltering helped as well.
Condolences to UWA, RMIT, and Wollongong.
Unfortunately I didn't get much of a chance to walk and talk with people. I had a quick look through the pits but ended up too busy in our pits keeping our car going.
As for the car swap, a huge thanks to Monash and Melbourne for letting me in their cars.
Truthfully, overall it was a bit disappointing in my opinion. Not letting you guys in Swinburne cars was a huge shame, but I wasn't in control of the car for the day. I really wanted Pete to have a go. The small turn out was a shame as well.
Opinions on cars:
Monash
Tons of grip and plenty of point. It goes where you want it to, when you want it to. Very hard to overstep the mark in that car. It inspires plenty of confidence. It is no wonder this car won.
However, you can get it wild if you want and step the back out very far, but you need to be trying.
Noticeably down on power compared to Swinburne, but it has enough. We have too much power.
Steering is bloody heavy. Heaviest of the three. You can still drive it very quick, but it does wear you out.
Shifter is the middle of the group. A lot of travel and not great feel, but it works every time. Also, very hard to tell what gear you are in with the ratio’s so close. Clutch is very nice and light. A lot better than ours.
Melbourne
Plenty of poke. It's got as much power as what we do in the mid range. Put your foot down and it put's you back in the seat. Plenty for what our cars need.
Steering is lighter than Monash's, but heavier than ours. It's good, doesn't wear you out.
Shifter, shocking, woeful and any other derogative term. It works, but no feel what so ever. To grab first gear you keep moving the shifter until you hear the box clunk. Once you’re going its luck to grab gear. The stock barrel you can deal with, but a few times I grabbed neutral between first and second.
The biggest problem with this car is the understeer. There is loads of it at every speed. You can’t power correct it either because of the spool (power understeer). You’re slower everywhere because it just won’t turn, and you know its coming.
Something both cars need is a gear change cut. It just takes that one thought train off the drivers, allowing them to concentrate on the track.
The tyre change was hugely interesting as well. Word on the wire (hush hush) say's another top placed team will be running goodyears next year.
I’ll let someone else review our car. That way it is more unbiased and relevant.
Also, sorry if people didn’t get a chance to talk to me about our powertrain package. Shoot me an email, a pm, or call me and I will tell you as much as I can. We are here to learn so I am happy to share.
Cheers
PS. Scott we “engineered” our “fat man’s” seat into the car at the track. Next time we go out it will be in a lot better. Either way it guarantees you will fit in our car, in that seat or our standard one. If you’re keen for a drive of a current SAE car (bloody seat designer’s as you say), let me know and I will keep you in the loop of when we are heading out.

I also meant to say, given the choice between having each of the three cars, it is very close between our car and Monash's.
I think if I had to choose, Monash's car would win. That's how good/incredible the grip is in it. It overcomes the other short comings and leaves you very impressed

Wish I went to the swap, did everyone do some karting afterwards?
next year I think I'll make sure to saty in melbourne for a bit. did anyone other than monash try different tyres?

Once again another fantastic/heartbreaking year for Auckland, all the promise in the world but lacking the reliability.
My comments about the relativity of the cars (I only drove Monashs and Melbournes cars- again guys thanks a lot for the opportunity. I was gutted to not be able to turn the favour) are very similar to what the others have said.
Monash
A very agressive car to drive. It seemed that if you had the goolies you could just keep pushing the car harder and harder and harder and the car would just hold on. The grip didn't fall away as much as the Goodyear's do (the tyres we run). The steering effort was quite high and a lot of driving time would be required to build up enough strength to be able to drive the car hard for a full endurance. The seemed a little uncomfortable but then it isn't really designed for someone as big as I am. (P.S. Scott and co, find some bloody shifter paddles http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif )
<3 the pedal box adjustment design.
Melbourne
The steering effort was almost too low in Melbourne's car- a quicker rack would make it faster to drive through the tight slaloms. I also found that the feedback through the steering wheel was lacking a bit, and it gave me little confidnece through some of the higher speed slaloms.
With both Melbourne and Monashs car running the spool I felt that the Monash car was significantly more predictable on corner exit than the Melbourne car- sometimes it would powerslide nicely off the corners, other times it would just plow. Maybe I wasn't driving the car hard enough to get it to work properly- Pete, do you have any comments on this?
As with the shifter I think the fact that it ended up backwards (apparently a balls up) meant that I had to consciously move the shifter the other way everytime that I went to shift, instead of focusing on missing cones.
Given the structure of the Melbourne team I think the guys did an extraordinary job this year to get the car running as it did.
Tyres
When we gave a set of Goody's to Monash to test I had no expectations of the tyres at all. The car was (apparetly) doing similar times, but the car looked a lot more clinical on track. I think the most interesting comment was Ashan's (the Monash driver) - "When I came to the slalom and turned in I hit the first cone with the inside front" and "reduced steering effort"
The Goodyear's have a substantially stiffer sidewall than the Avon's, and maybe this led to a much faster tyre transient.
Overall I am really glad and appreciative of the car swap and I encourage more teams to participate next year if it happens again. Even just being around and discussing designs and ideas with the "old guys" was very insightful.

Here are our photo's from the event. We have more coming as well, but as expected, they do focus on our teams event. Plenty of photos of other cars though. I'm interested to see what photo's everyone else got as I had very little time to see everyone else's cars.

Firstly, congrats to all the teams for making it to comp. It was obvious from the troubles of the big names that it was a difficult year. Once again, Monash dominated with such a simple design(excepting the aero). Swinburne got the podium they probably should have gotten last year as well. Sophia had an absolutely stunning car that i was in love with (especially that supercharger whine) but seemed like it should have had more pace given its tuning time. ADFA went much better than previous years, as did UTS (who had an amazing car considering their last effort, and who could have gone much better had they had more than one good driver).
A Wollongong perspective:
First year since 2004 without a turbo, and it was extremely noticeable. The car was pretty much gutless compared to what we are used to, despite the 8 years younger base engine (99 F4 to 07 RR). Dynamically the car was lacking a proper setup and tuning. We seem to pretty much re-invent the wheel every year so it was a fantastic job for the team to get through all events bar skidpad (missed due to scrut). Considering the tragic death of our suspension leader/tech director earlier in the year and the lack of expertise to take over from him, i think the team pulled the car together reasonably well (especially considering the numbers). The car had driven at walking pace in the carpark outside the workshop prior to leaving, so there was no driver training or tuning to speak of, and only one driver had driven at comp before. Once again the design judging was a strange mixed bag, and like last year the cars weight does not seem to factor into any decisions made by the judges. Cost and presentation went well. UoW finished 8th overall with a very low (considering enduro finish) 479 points.
A very big special thankyou to Monash, who provided us with a muffler and allowed us to modify it to fit after ours fell off UWA-style during autocross. It was fantastic to see such help being offered to anyone who asked and it was fantastic to give help when asked. Everyone from every team i talked to was willing to discuss designs, problems, and successes, and that's a great part of the competition. Hopefully i will be able to come down for a look again next year.

Is the screen on the rear cylinder to check the lubrication?
Our engine expert looking at the red oil stain is asking himself what kind of oil was used.

Pretty sure that engine hadn't expired, they just pulled it out and dumped it on the ground without letting the oil drain properly.

Hey guys where are all these videos I hear about?
I hardly got to see a wheel turn at comp this year, and would love to see more of the cars in action.
Monash's car can sit down on it's locked axle pretty easy and from there it's a bit of a dog. Poke it with a sharp stick and it will liven up and dance for you. I found any steering input needs to be accompanied with a sharp change in power, either up or down, and then its fine. This is pretty much the same as a gokart.
I wish UWA could have had a car there, but its too hard to do it on the Tuesday unless we stay an extra day. Also wish we could have had a Kart race. A bit cut there were no hire karts available at a hire kart place, but I think they were working on them figuring it would be FSAE cars all day. Next year maybe we can let them know, and have a bit more of an organised Kart race.

Thanks to the Ashan and Monash team for giving me a go in their car.
Monash
As the others have already said, the first thing thing to hit you when you jump in Monash's car is the amount of grip, touch the steering and it dives in. It felt like it would be very hard to lose control.
I also really like the pedal box design, a great example of what an adjustable pedal box should look like!
One thing that I found surprising was how much steering effort was required - I imagine an endurance drive is a lot of work.
Overall an awesome car - you guys deserved the win, well done.
Melbourne
Just a word in defence of our car, although we did have problems with understeer, when I jumped in our car at the end of the driver swap, the understeer was far greater than it was at comp. There were a few setup changes in the morning which I suspect caused this. (And I still maintain that I haven't been spoilt by my laps in the Monash car!)
Thanks to all the drivers for their feedback.

Who was the team using the "Acoustafill" product in their muffler?
We want to get some of it to try out and wondered if you had a contact you would like to share.

I've found some pictures from last year's competition and uploaded them to our facebook page if anyone wants to have a look. I'll put some more into the album soon.
