Wollongong's website has a newsletter up from August which definitely suggests they're building a car. I think their goal for a running car was mid september? Seems like most Aus teams have gone quiet lately, I suspect there's some long hours going down in fsae workshops throughout the country. We've been wondering whether our countrymen Waikato are going to be there this year. Haven't heard anything from them since early this year although someone at a dragstrip we use for testing mentioned that they had been there running so they must have something going for this year.

I don't recall seeing them on the entry list.

A lot of indian teams entered for '08 (six I think!).

If they do come, they'll be one to watch as they could be bringing their 07 car with a lot of testing and tuning?

Who is entered for FSAE-A? Could you please post a list Chris.

The bit of paper is at our workshop, so I'll post it sometime tomorrow.

Some off the top of my head (besides the obvious ones);

ANU
Stuttgart
A technical uni from Malaysia
Helsinki
Curtin
Several Indian teams

Anyway, I'll post the entry list tomorrow.

Not on this year's team, but wollongong is definitely building a car (sadly the word is still "building" not "driving").

This will be my first comp as a spectator, should be fun.

Hi,
I am from Indian Institute of Technology, Madras. We would be participating for the first time in an FSAE competition and are thrilled as well as nervous. Our car should be ready (minus the body works) in another 2 weeks.
Looking forward to meet you all next month.

I would post a pic of the car, but it's in a million pieces.

Some teasers of some parts that will be appearing on our first ever car... http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Our completed hubs
http://i480.photobucket.com/albums/rr161/digitalpho3nix2/hubs.jpg

Nearly completed Differential Assembly. The Center still needed some machining at the time of the photo, but has since been completed.

Looks fantastic!

I really do envy your aero testing capabilities. I would really like to at least build a scale tunnel of some sort in the future.

I reckon we'll be rolling within a week if everything goes to plan, and our wheels clear customs in time. Damn customs...

Adelaide have always had very nice fabbed uprights.

Correct me if I'm wrong; but on the front upright are your upper and lower rod end mounts in single shear?(also lower upright on the rear?)

I remember Pat chewing out some deign about single shear rod-ends. Please tell me I'm missing something?

Fil

Single shear pickups shouldn't be a problem if you know all the problems associated with it and design the upright to make sure it's as stiff and strong as a double shear pickup.

UWA have been running single shear pickups for donkeys and I don't see them having any problem in design simply because they have justified the design. I was looking at single shear lower pickups this year to allow for rapid roll centre adjustment, but I couldn't ensure the same performance as double shear. Each to their own.

Below are the '08 cars uprights, fronts weigh in at 650g and rears are a little on the heavy 850g side because the CV's run inside the hub so the bearings had to be quite large. It's cool to see the different ideas on upright design.

Yes the pick up points are only in single shear, but the FEAs have shown negligible compliance at the pin. Also, our wishbones do not use rod ends, they are spherical bearings mounted in the wishbone.

As pointed out by Fil, UWA ran their uprights like this last year and so did we. Neither of us had issues, so I believe it is fine. Hopefully Pat Clark is a bit more lenient of if it's single shear without rod ends http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Our uprights have come up as 600g on the front and 690g on the rear with basically the same stiffness as last year, so we're quite happy with them.

Not always... 2005 had CNC ally fronts and cast ally rears for the DeDion, 2006 had CNC allys all round. 2004, 2007 and 2008 have fabbed 4130 uprights. We brought them back last year since we had so much other machining to do, we offloaded some work to fab instead (very glad we did too).

Not to mention, in 2007 ours were 800g front and 865g rear, well done boys! They're quite a bit smaller too.

My bad. I should have been more specific, all the sheet metal fabbed uprights I have seen from your team, I been very impressed with the workman-ship and welding. I wasn't around for your CNC or Cast ones.

Looking good Curtin, do you shim out your diff to tension it? How close are you to rolling?

Anyone else notice the RMIT are having their launch tomorrow? I'm interested to see how their usually tiny car turns out for the 2009 templates.

L B0MB
10-27-2008, 08:55 PM
Yeah, we use shims for chain tensioning, nice and simple

Almost everything has been fabbed, we are just finding out things arent bolting together as easily as we'd like. I'd say we are a week off a rolling chassis

Design took too long this year hence why we are a tad behind

RMIT have put up photos of their new car (http://www.fsae.rmit.edu.au/)
Initially it seems very similar in terms of overall layout to the last couple of cars, can't see much in the way of details which I imagine is where most changes lie. I'd like to learn more about the structural sidepods, will probably have to wait until the competition (not long now!)
