To all formulaSAE collegiate teams,
I was wondering what the common body fastener is that everyone is using this year for competition.
Is a DZUS-style fastener a good bet?
What about a 1/4-turn?
Where can I get a decent (and cheap) fastener?
TG.

We use dzus fasteners from Hoerr Racing Products. They have them in stock and are FSAE friendly. http://www.hrpworld.com

I would have to say they are NOT FSAE friendly, in our experience... $55 for shipping of 20 Dzus fasteners is absurd.
I have been too busy to contact them about this. But when I do, they will hear about it.
For gawd sakes, the stuff we order from Taylor Race was the same price and it arrived faster while 3x the weigth.
...pass over your mom's KY please...ouch!

Hoerr has been great to us. If you have any problems with anything I'm sure they would love to hear from you before you publicly slander them! I'm sure they'll make it right I've been dealing with them for years.

Just to quantify things, is that $55 CAD? And also expect shipping prices to double when going over the boarder. At least that's what I've found from my personal experiences.
our last years team used velcro for quick access
to the nose area

Slander: A FALSE defamation which injures the character or reputation of the defamed.
Can't be slander if it's the truth: They were not FSAE friendly, in our experience.
Oh yes, $55USD. This is a quote directly from the UPS website: UPS Standard $9.75USD. Now UPS website does show a price of $53.01USD for next day delivery. However that was not purchased nor received, other than the price.
I have had a relative career in dealing with shipping/receiving (+20 years). I know when I am being had, and by whom.

Well for the schools that use dzus fasteners, how many do you usually use? Our body guy estimated we would need around 30-40, does that sound a little excessive?
They are pretty heavy and it will add up.

40 is probably too many, but it depends on your bodywork. Make sure it's cone-impact-worthy. Ours wasn't last year, and it cost us a top 5 finish. Cone impact -> sidepod dragging on ground -> Meatball, DNF.

Yes 30-40 does sounds excessive. However, maybe it isn't depending on how much your body covers the chassis.
We have a nose section, two side panels, and two small sidepods. We're using 11 Dzus fasteners.

Well thats the exact same body setup we have, so I'm sure we don't need 30. Thanks! I think we'll go for 10 http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif.

Yeah, definitely 10-12, not 30-40. I'm not even sure where I'd put 30-40 on ours. 4 nose, and usually 4 each for the pods here.

4 nose, 6 each side, 1 in the center rear = 17

Take a closer look at the shipping invoice -- In my experience it's usually UPS' exhorbitant brokerage fees that kill you on shipments from the US. Thieves and scroundrels one and all, not to mention a consistent blatent disregard for the items shipped.
If you haven't already noticed, I'm a wee bit anti-UPS http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
Brown sucks, use FedEx, their pricing is higher but the service is stellar and they don't drop kick your stuff and charge ridiculous hidden brokerage fees.

We have our own broker...
The price was set at Hoerr Racing.
