Hi
can anybody tell me some experiences about upright designing?
Im a little confused about calculating the dynamic forces that act on upright.

in Delft we calculate the tyre contact patch forces, which can than be translated to the axle via a force vector method. We generally apply 3 loadcases max lateral, max normal and max longitudinal and use FEA to optimize our design. Furthermore I would suggest to use the search option on this forum for conceptual designs of uprights. Good luck.

imagine if the car is fully loaded on one corner while turning; something we consider in our design.

you also have braking forces to keep in mind.

For a first year design i would stick to something simple. In the past i designed some that used box steel tubing which was far cheaper and easier to make than sheetmetal uprights.
Our old steel uprights weighed 2.1 lbs with the spindle included and took literally 2 hours to make both fronts.

it did take 2 hours.. of course, that was from 1-3 A.M. when I was mad at Drew for breaking the car.
