The bouncers and the owner of the bar we went to were unreasonable guys to deal with. Think a new location for next year would be mean. im sure there be quite a few people who would agree with this.

Mabey a place that can deal with that many people?

Suggestions? Apparently RMIT organized it.... not to sure though?

We (Team ECU) rocked up pretty late after our head of school shouted us a nice dinner, so the place was pretty rowdy by the time we got there at 11pm.

I ended up spending most of my time in the smoking room, which surprisingly was less stuffy and much quieter than the rest of the pub.

Shitty dance music played at 200dB isn't (and never was) my cup of tea.

I dont think there's any venue that can handle a few hundred drunk uni students, so good luck with finding anothe venue.

We didn't have any problems with the bouncers/staff, apart from them cutting everyone off from the bar way too early. Even our advisor, who wasn't drinking, couldn't get us drinks.

There loss though as i had just gotten $200 out of the atm and was prepared to go home with none of it.

Surely in Melbourne, a venue could be sorted to cope with the number of people. The promblem was there would be sober people wanting to go outside for some fresh air and the owner denied them entry for no reason.

I saw one ask to guy if it was alright to leave for 2 mins and come back in. The guy was like "yea thats all good", easily 2 minutes later the guy comes back and is told to bugger off.

I unfortunately didn't attend this years comp to much sadness http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif. Was the after party at the Colonial again?

My first year in 06, the after party was at the Back Lot which is located inside the Rydges in Melbourne's CBD. It was the best after party I went to, a great venue, maybe it could be looked into again? Though cost may be a small factor... I'm not too sure if the venue still exists however?

We had trouble also, jonnyluu didnt even get let in when there were plenty of people way more intoxicated than him, a few left and didnt get back in at around 12ish the bouncers blamed lockout, not to sure about that.

im sure some of the melbourne guys know of somewhere good.

The trick is to get there early, get way pissed, then go down the road to a more, ahh, accommodating place...

Have to agree with William Smurf on the topic.

The place the party was held was pretty small for that many people. And the bar seemed like it struggled pretty bad. I didnt have bouncer/owner problems, but was talking to people who did have issues. Surely there are better places to get on the piss in Melbourne that would happily have a big group of engineers there?

Thumbs up to the strippers down the road though, good times

I'm going to throw in my 2c worth here...

I actually want to thank Johanna and the RMIT team for sorting out an after party- up until a couple of weeks before the competition it didn't even seem there was going to be one. After the '07 after party (the last SAE held event) Lee Mitchener took on the mission of sorting one out so that we could continue to party like a bunch of drunk engineering students http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif . This year it seemed that everyone assumed RMIT was going to sort one out again for everyone else to enjoy, and I'm grateful they spent the time and effort to do it for us.

If you want to complain about the venue they organised I don't think they would complain if someone else took the responsibility of organising a piss up for 400ish drunk engineers on a Sunday night off their shoulders.

Not to discredit the organisation of the after party, Cause it was a pretty decent affair. But theres always room for improvement to make things bigger and better. some one has to do it and im quite thankful they did.

Defently room to go one better, aint that the engineering way.

Quoted for truth. I didn't have any unjustified issues at the after party and I had plenty of bad memories from the weekend to try to erase (fairly unsuccessfully I must admit).

Hats off to the RMIT guys who have organised us what for me have been great after parties, certainly for me better than either the '06 or '07 ones that I also attended.

Firstly, thanks to the guys who have given the positive words about the after party, it's appreciated. Despite not organising it, I was the one running around taking your money on Sunday afternoon.

Event organising in the CBD of Melbourne is a royal pain in the a these days, with new liquor laws, rise in cost of hiring etc. The real issue though is this afterparty is held on a Sunday, and so yeah, lockout is earlier than a Friday or Saturday night.

Any ideas for locations for this year (as no doubt, RMIT will get to step up to the plate and organise this again), would be appreciated. It's not that easy to organise an event like this AND be a part of the race team, and kudos to Joh for her mega effort in 2010.

In regards to security etc, you'll get that with any pub, club or venue with that many people, especially on a Sunday. They do have a licence to keep after all.

Hi guys

I'm Joh, last years team leader/suspension head for RMIT. I organised the after party - thanks for the nice words from a few of you. Yes Lee did take it on after SAE bailed for insurance reasons, and I stuck with the format that he'd had - I could organise it fast, and I could get it cheaper because we've been running the event there for a few years now.

Definitely RMIT would love to be rid of that responsibility - I think we should come up with an unofficial rule that maybe the reigning victorian team organises it? Or similar. We are really struggling for members these days, our chief engineer was also our engine head, and it was hard for me that I had to organise that on top of team leader/suspension.

As for the venue - I was at the 2009 one as well, and my boyfriend at the last four or five years, and it got waaaay more loose way more quickly this year than the last few events. The bouncers were kicking out people for crowd surfing... a few people came and complained to me but the reality is you can't crowd surf at a Metallica concert, why would you be able to in a pub?Definitely someone could look into a better venue. I looked at places outside the city briefly, which would make it a lot cheaper, but it would be harder for the visiting teams to get there.

As far as the space issue goes - I sold like 380 tickets or something crazy. There's never been numbers like that before, I'm not sure how I managed it, I was expecting 200-250. So if those numbers look possible again, I would look for a bigger venue, but I'm not sure you'll find one in the city. The DJ was pretty rubbish, the venue picked him out so that I didn't have to do it, but of course you can pick whatever you want (cover band, DJ, house stuff or whatever) - you can change venue, have different or no food, whatever you want! I just didn't have the time or resources to work out what would be best/cheapest/easy to get to. If someone does have the time... get into it! Coz I guarantee you RMIT won't.

Hope all that helps - happy venue hunting http://fsae.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif.
