I'm having a hard time finding metal supplier that has 1040 or similar steel plate. I need to find steel that is to be used for the brake rotors. What material do other people use for their brake rotors? and where do people get the metal?

You're having a hard time finding a supplier that has hot rolled mild steel plate? That seems really odd. There's a place right in Boulder that we've bought from before.

mcmaster.com or mscdirect.com would probably have the goods

Hunt around campus, scrounge. Steel is cheap. A lot of shops/labs will just give it to you if you're nice.

Really?? That's very odd. Its plain steel.

Go around to your Civil Engineering department. Hit up some of ther labs or machine shops. They usually got tons of steel plate layin around. Cold rolled, hot rolled, stainless.. and that's all you need for FSAE brakes. Personally I'd go with straight HRS

And if not, http://www.mcmaster.com has everything. Though I feel they gouge prices.

Try http://www.rsac.com I bet you there's a large steel distributor close to you. ODU, thats Old Dominion? In/around Norfolk? They don't have anything in Virginia, but..

Durrett Sheppard Steel Co., Inc. - 6800 E. Baltimore Street, Baltimore, MD, 21224 - Tel: 410-633-6800

Chatham Steel Corporation - 2702 Cheek Road, Durham, NC, 27704 - Tel: 919-682-3388

Phoenix Metals Company - 10409 John Price Road, Charlotte, NC, 28241 - Tel: 704-588-7075

Should be easy to find some plain steel. Grows on trees.

Edit - Better yet..

http://www.norfolkiron.com/ Looks like they'd have what you need

Or Novamerican Steel, in Ashland VA (804) 798-6031

http://www.novamerican.com/

Edit 2 - When you talk to these folks and tell em what kind of size you need... often times the larger places only sell large size plates (many yards long), and not little 8x8" squares. Be like, "Yea I'm so and so from blah university, looking for X size plate, doesn't need to be cut from new stock. Remnants work fine. Whatever's best for you".

Dont ask for scrap. For whatever reason they get pissed sometimes. Remnants is the magic word.
