wondering how other teams positivly lock their bolts that hold the uprights to the a-arms, I have seen a lot of pictures with blind holes and no visible restraint. We were required to safety wire our bolts to the uprights at comp to pass tech, and drillin bolt heads sucks. We did have locking nuts welded in the uprights, the ones with the dimple, but I have found that from taking the bolt out only a few times it has lost its locking power. If someone wants picts about what I'm talking about I can add some.

We've had similar issues. The prevailing torque nuts do lose their locking ability with repeated use. Where I work we are only allowed to use nuts and bolts twice before they are trash. I understand though that judges are doubtful when we say "sure there is a positive locking weld nut inside the upright where no one can see unless we destroy it..." We had to drill the bolts out for safety wire at competition to pass tech. It hurts to say it, but the aggies saved our asses again after our vice in the trailer broke and they let me use the drill press in their gigantic trailer.

This is a little off topic, but I cant resist. Our team spent the night before the endurance race with a drill press setup on our hotel room dresser, one guy on the bed (me) safety wiring assemblies together, one person rebuilding 35 year old Volkswagen C.V. joints in the sink, and another in our trailer in the parking lot in the pouring rain trying to reassembly part we got done. We also had our roll-around tool box in the room and the 10 ton press to press apart our diff. You ever tried to sleep somewhere after someone tired tried to build AN lines in your bed? Ouch.

Everything on our car is safety wireed or nylock. Access is designed in so that we can get to it. If it has to be a blind whole we know at design time and the bolt is installed ready to be safety wired.

the bolt in question from last year...
drilling is a b*tch especially if it is an ARP stud....we secure the stud as well with loctite inside....

we used alen head bolts for or wheel studs, we found out they had to be safety wired since they went thru our brake disk as well, the guys at GM went thru a good 20 bits getting through those 8 bolts.
