Chances are most of you here on the forum don’t know me. Let’s just say I’m an old racer lucky enough to make a living pursuing my passion. FSAE is a marvelous program and a place where a young racer may find that same curiosity and fire.

So, here is a lucky break for two of you aspiring motorsports engineers. The first 2 people to email me (John@auto-ware.com) will get a free seat in the Data Acquisition training webinars my company provides. You can see details about the classes at www.auto-ware.com/webinar_home.html (http://www.auto-ware.com/webinar_home.html) but you have to act fast as I’m only giving away 2 seats and only to FSAE students.

This is not a scam or joke, you can search my name here in the forum and see that I make this offer from time to time and the posts from those who have attended in the past.

Congrats to Cody of U Waterloo and Ross of Cal Poly. They are in for a good ride.

As engineers we tend to have a mind set often dictated from a design mode. However, after 40 years of working on race cars I can tell you that data acq is excellent to help "close the loop." If data acq is not part of your program, you have given up a major learning opportunity.

I would highly encourage that any team who wished to learn how to use data aquisition and learn those techniques from someone who definetely has tons of knowledge in this area. I am not just saying this because John and Autoware were kind enough to give away a free seat to his webinar. I believe that every team should attend a DAq webinar if they want to maximize the performance of the car; and I say this even though it gives away a small competitive advantage over those who have not attended the webinar.

I realize now, that for as long as we have been doing DAq on our racecar (atleast 5 years now with AiM) that we have not been utilizing the system in any capacity. We might use it to compare drivers to some degree but we have never made use of it to tell us information about the driver and the car and its general behavior and trends. We have previosuly only used it in the strictest sense of gathering specific data but not anything within the big picture so to speak. The information that I have gained from the webinar will be used for the next two years (while I am part of and leading our team) and I can see us, sending members from our team to attend future webinars (they are honestly that useful in providing that initial step to anyone starting out with DAq and thinking about seriously analyzing data).

We are possibly switching to Pi next/this year and will probably attend them again once we do.
