Based on the success of the first Collegiate Roadshow at Cedarville University on September 30th, the SAE's Motorsport Engineering Activity will be hosting the second Roadshow in conjunction with this year's Motorsport Engineering Conference.
The Roadshow will be held at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, Dearborn, on Monday December 4th, 2006, and will last all day.
For those who were unable to attend the first Roadshow at Cedarville, several of those presentations will be repeated, namely, Team Organization, Project Management, Safety, Base Engines and Engine Calibrations 101, and Suspensions 101. (Carl Occhilalini of Lincoln Welding is giving two oral presentations on welding during the MSEC itself, so will not be repeating his Cedarville presentation.)
For those who did attend the first Roadshow, there will be four new topics:
− Wiring & Electrical Systems 101 by Jim Kelly of Precision Race Services.
− Data Acquisition 101 by Frank Whiton of GM.
− Brake Systems 101 by Paul Gritt of DaimlerChrysler.
− Suspension Development &Tuning by Steve Lyman of DaimlerChrysler.
There will be a small charge to cover the luncheon voucher and some light refreshments.
Pre-registration will be required through the official SAE web site. Specific information to follow.
The Motorsports Engineering Conference itself will be held at the Hyatt Regency from Tuesday, December 5th through Thursday, December 7th. Students who are SAE members may register for the MSEC at no charge, while those who are not SAE members will have a registration fee of $25. Information on the MSEC can be found at:

Good to hear it will happen. I should make half of it, as I'm already on the first NWA flight out of Tampa that morning.

A little more information on the program for the Second Collegiate Roadshow at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Dearborn on Monday, December 4th:
PROGRAM & SPEAKERS
Team Organization
The topics that will be covered include Leaders & Leadership, the Types of Team Organization, Tasks as they define the organization, and the Recruiting and Retention of team members. The speaker will be Michael Royce, who has over 40 years experience in the automotive industry including over 20 years in management.
Project Management
This session will outline some of the basics of Project Management including Planning (the What, When and How?) and Execution (the Processes involved). The speaker will be Michael Royce.
Safety
Safety is a major issue that all team members need to keep in mind at all times. Messrs Lyman and Royce will review safety items as they apply to vehicle design, the shop, drivers' equipment, while practicing and testing, driving to the event and at the event itself.
Suspensions 101
An overview on suspension design practices, suspension types, key components, kinematics and compliances, wheel alignment adjustment, structural considerations, and an honorable mention of tires will be presented by Steve Lyman, Senior Specialist in Vehicle Dynamics at the DaimlerChrysler Corporation.
Base Engines & Engine Calibration 101
Engines are the prime motivator for race vehicles and need to be understood in terms of thermodynamics, heat transfer, combustion, aerodynamics & gas exchange, mechanical design and control theory to get the most out of them. The basics of all the above will be covered by John Bucknell - an OE engine performance development engineer with background in FSAE, rally cars and high performance production boosted engines.
Wiring & Electrical Systems 101
Jim Kelly, the co-founder and co-owner of PRS (Precision Race Services) will cover some of the principles of wiring and electrical components as they apply to race cars.
Data Acquisition 101
The scope of this course is to provide a basic overview in Race Car data acquisition set-up techniques. Topics include establishing goals, selecting sensors, establishing data rates, shopping for a Data system and basic analysis. The speaker Frank Whiton - GM Race Vehicle Engineering, has over 27 years in test and development, most recently providing data acquisition support in GrandAM series Cobalts.
Brake Systems 101
In Brake Systems 101, Paul Gritt will cover the basic principles of a brake system, hydraulic system layouts, the functions of the major components, brake balance and stopping distance. Paul has been involved in all aspects of brake engineering for the past 37 years. He has been a member of the SAE's Brake Activities Committee for over 24 years, and is currently the Senior Brake System Specialist at the DaimlerChrysler Corporation.
Suspension Development & Tuning
A systematic approach to chassis development and vehicle performance gains through planning, discipline, and efficient use of resources outlined by Steve Lyman.
The Team Organization, Project Mangement, Safety, Suspensions 101 and Base Engines & Engine Calibration 101 presentations are repeats of those given at the first Roadshow at Cedarville University.
The Wiring & Electrical Systems, Data Acquistion, Brake Systems and Suspension Development & Tuning are new topics.
