Discussion Topic  Ackerman or parallel steer? (in Open FSAE Discussion) by Mechanicaldan
Just a quick survey. Do you run Ackerman or parallel steer? Last year we ran parallel steer, but I think we should have Ackerman because of the small radius of the turns at competition. Cyclone Racing www.cyclone-racing.com/fhome.htm Iowa State University Project Director...

Discussion Topic  RE: Tie rods (in Open FSAE Discussion) by exFSAE
Harshbarger - I've found that the sweep of the tie rods forward or backward has a major effect on Ackerman progression. Ie you can have a pro Ackerman "slope" at small steer angles but then progress to reverse Ackerman at large steering inputs, or vice versa....

Discussion Topic  RE: Ackerman help (in Open FSAE Discussion) by D J Yates
My team mate Tom (TomW on the forum) made a spread sheet to calculate ackerman angles. Apperently it's hard to calculate ackerman based on the difference of steer angles, so he'd calculate the steer angles based on the ackerman and an input steer angle, and use the Excel solve tool to iterate...

Discussion Topic  Calculating Steering wheel angles (in Open FSAE Discussion) by Pauly
With zero ackerman am just calculating steering angles using inv tan(L/R). where L is wheelbase and R is radius. This seems to be right. However for 100% ackerman I am having trouble. How do you go from 0% which I have calculated to calculating 100% ackerman?- obviously for inner wheel. AM trying...

Discussion Topic  Ackerman (in Open FSAE Discussion) by Macs Stang
. My first question is about ackerman. I am using susprog3d to design the steering system. I understand ackerman, but from some of the information I have gathered it is confusing me as to the amount of ackerman that is good and bad. When it is said to run 100% that means parallel steering. I have...
