Hello all,
I thought I would start a thread specific to photos only. This was my first year as a team member and my first year at competition. I'm a big photography freak, and while my forte is actually portraiture, fashion, and glamour, I'll shoot anything I can get my hands on. In total, I shot 1,945 images in 1.81GB from Thursday to Sunday morning (couldn't stay for the banquet). I weeded out the majority of the out-of-focus, redundant, and pointless images. The Endurance album was the last one I had to do, and after my eyes started bugging out I gave up, so you guys will have to sort through the 400-something images in there. http://stoopidsavant.com/v-web/gallery/0505fsae I apologize to the teams that I didn't get to shoot, but I was limited either by time or how long I could stand out in the sun. There is obviously a copious amount of photos of the Rutgers car, since I do have an allegiance. If FSAE would care to hire me as a paid photographer next year, I'll be sure to grab as many teams as I can. For the curious, here are the details: Camera: Canon EOS 20D Lens: Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM lens (rented from Adorama in New York) Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM (for the candid shots) Support: Giottos 4-section aluminum monopod Storage: Sandisk Ultra II 2GB compact flash card Settings: Full resolution (8.2MP), normal JPEG quality, daylight white balance, ISO100, Shutter priority @ 1/200sec for endurance, AI Servo autofocus, IS Mode 1 Unfortunately, I do not have the online storage nor the bandwidth to host the full 8.2MP images of everything, but just to show you what it would normally look like, here's a freebie to UTA: http://stoopidsavant.com/v-web/gallery/fsae_endurance/IMG_0008?full=1 Ok, enough geekspeak. Enjoy the photos, and post what you've shot as well! ~Vu Rutgers Formula Racing Photographer |

I HAVE to get me one of those cameras
VERY nice photos; FSAE would be daft not to employ half a dozen guys like you for promo purposes! Hell, you'd probably earn your keep/pay for yourself selling (digital copies of) a few of the best photos at $10pop back to the teams - if I were UTA I'd have paid for that one! -- Marko |

Very sweet. Super work. And agreed with Marko about upselling the 8.2MP ones...a poster-sized print of your own car sure would be worth something.

haha, glad to know you guys can still keep a good sense of humor. Thanks for all the kind words. C'mon people, I know I saw a few white Canon L lenses out there and a few Nikon 70-200 f/2.8 VR's - even talked to a dude with a D2x. There was even a guy next to me during endurance using the same 100-400 Canon lens I was (albeit with a 1-Series film body). Where are your pictures? |

Good work, Dan. I wish I had spent more time documenting the technology in other teams' cars. Oh well, another mental note for next year, if I'm still around.
Mike, I sent you a PM. |

How much does it cost to rent an L series lens? And is this a fairly common practice?

I rented the lens from Adorama in New York City. It cost $105USD to rent for seven days, and with 8% NY sales tax, it ended up being around $115USD. I believe for single day rentals, it's $35/day. I drove up to NY to pick it up the day before my flight out to Detroit, then returned it to the store the day after I returned.
Camera equipment rental seems to be a fairly common practice. It'll usually be traveling professionals who can't ship 500 pounds worth of lighting gear with them, or people who need a lens critically for one event but can't justify purchasing it (like in my case), or students who can't afford the full purchase price of a piece of equipment. Rentals are not limited to just lenses - people rent cameras (film, digital, 35mm, medium format, large format, etc.), lighting equipment, support hardware, etc. Most metropolitan cities should have camera stores that will rent out equipment. If you don't live near a store that does, I believe Adorama (among others) will ship the hardware out to you, at additional cost. |
