Hey,

Has anyone every heard of an ecu that is equipped with an OBD2 system that someone could buy without buying the whole car? Either that or could an ecu from something be taken from an engine and put into say, an engine that wasn't designed for it? Well, has anyone ever heard the idea before?

because in my state, for a kit type car, they require it to adhere to the laws of whatever year the chassis was built, and i can't hand fabricate my own chassis (maybe thats for the better...) This means an OBD2 equipped engine, but as car as i can tell there's nothing that suits me. At least thats what i've heard, but the info is from at least 5 years ago. And I don't feel like calling the phone number they give me, cause im just in the dreaming stages of a project. i need to concentrate on graduating first.

You're in luck.

"All cars and light trucks built and sold in the United States after January 1, 1996 were required to be OBD II equipped. In general, this means all 1996 model year cars and light trucks are compliant, even if built in late 1995."

So find a nice domestic engine/chassis combination of your choice, there are a thousand of them, and have your way with it.

Or find a foreign motor close enough that you can put OBD-II compliant hardware on it.
