I think it would be a good idea if it was mounted transversly and still utilized the awd system. Otherwise it is dumb.

I highly doubt that any of the drivetrain is stock. With that supercharger they could see 500hp easily and a lot more torque then the 4 banger would put out with mods.

EVo's with gt35 turbos with shitloads of power are a dime a dozen these days. I'm not saying the trans dont have problems holding high levels but if you are going to run such high boosted engines with not so great low end drivability the idea of doing a N/A ls1 swap doesnt sound so bad. Just swap in a cheap ass gen 3 ls1 with a cam and head package and that is good for 400-500hp. The level people are trying to take awd platforms with mongo turbos these days this might be the next step for reliable. Its funny how 10 years ago import kids would think you wre an idiot for using a 2 liter honda over a 1.8. Funny now all you hear is k20 head on a k24 block are the shit and the sti has a 2.5 liter. There are still ej20 kids that have that attitude.

The transfer case is usually the first thing to break... I've seen 3 broken ones just this year in Portland alone.
Probably not as much torque...but doable. FSAE n00b. NHRA SFWD, NOPI T4, SCCA ITA, and Corona Desafio T4 Competitor. |

Over 400 ft lbs of torque for about 3000 rpm is very comparable for an ls1 since most awd nuts launch around 5000 anyway. It is just in a different rev ban for a 4g. Point being if you could fit an ls1 you would probably loose a little weight and actually have driveability in the lower rpm ranges. Shit audi is already doing it with a 4.2 v8 in their s4. See how quick they dropped the 1.8t even though the engine is capable of good power.

Based on my experience swapping a Buick V6 into a 1985 Nissan 4X4, packaging is always the #1 limitation...which is why I didn't stuff a cheaper and more powerful Chevy V8 in the old Bu-San.
If he would have mounted it transversely the front of the engine would almost certainly end up deep in the wheel well. Seeing as how they had to notch the hood for the intake pipe, I would guess there's no room for front drivetrain either, leaving the current setup as the only feasible solution. Wonder how long the rear end will hold up? I'm guessing it's stock Mitsu? A stock LS1 will blow up a 7.5 in. 10 bolt with a decent set of slicks. Based on the beautiful idle this baby probably has close to 500hp without the supercharger. Although I have heard of guys running 10 second quarter mile times in old 280z's with V8 swaps and stock rears. But again, of all the cars to do a V8 swap in, this isn't on my list. Seems like a waste of a pretty well sorted out car. Iowa State University Technical Director Fall '07, '08 Suspension Team Leader '06-'07 |

like my daddy always said, there's no replacement for displacement...but seriously, the headers are probably wrapped around the front suspension, it looks like they had to "tweak" the firewall, and I'm amazed that there is any clearance between the electric water pump and the electric fans. I wonder what they're running for a transmission to have enough ground clearance.
Although, this makes my small block/S10 swap look a lot easier. Wild Hare Racing: The Heat and Power Lab ?-2008 Rest in Pieces |
